The mobile gaming business, in particular the market for mobile games, is estimated to have reached over $100 billion this year, according to Data.ai’s Gaming Spotlight 2023 research (co-operated with IDC), while the console gaming market is estimated to have reached $43 billion, up 3% from the same period last year. Spending on video game consoles like the PlayStation 5 (Sony) and Xbox Series X |S (Microsoft) is rising, contributing to this expansion. This year, the PC/Mac gaming business brought in $40 billion, a 4% increase from the previous year.
According to industry experts, sales of already registered games are more likely to generate income. According to data.ai, the Nintendo Switch Lite is losing popularity while the Steam Deck and other portable gaming systems are gaining ground. It is predicted that by 2023, there will be 60 million monthly active users of cloud-based gaming (CSG) around the world, generating a total of $3.8 billion in revenue across all platforms.
The mobile gaming industry is worth $108 billion, or around 55% of the total worldwide gaming market. The Asia-Pacific (APAC) area has the most users and the highest revenue per device. Customers in APAC increased their spending on mobile by 1.7 percentage points, on PC/Mac by 2.2 percentage points, and on console by 0.4 percentage points in the first quarter of 2023. Data.ai and IDC both attribute much of the expansion to South Korea.
In the first quarter of 2023, game loads are typically lower in North American and Western markets. Data.ai and IDC both say that inflationary pressures in Ukraine are to blame for the conflict there. Among the remaining markets, Brazil, Turkey, and Mexico show the most promising expansion.
It’s worth noting that mobile has a significant impact on the cloud gaming industry. Roughly 50% of MAUs use mobile at least once a day to access CSG. IDC estimates that mobile devices now account for 26% of all time spent playing cloud-based games. This is due to the fact that ISPs in developing countries are beginning to offer cloud-based gaming services.
