The brief
What it is and how it was built.
Một Ngày Làm Chó ("A Day as a Dog") starts from one joke: you do not get to pick your dog. A slot machine draws one for you. It might be a police German Shepherd, it might be a pig, and on a bad day it is Chuột.exe, a mouse. Then you live on a Vietnamese street that never ends, with tube houses, lampposts, a sausage cart and a few locals walking up and down. Your job is to bark, pee on posts, steal slippers, find something to eat and stay away from the dog thieves' motorbike.
The street has real players on it. Each neighbourhood holds up to 30 dogs, and anyone can send a link that brings friends into theirs. Dogs bite each other, hold bark duels and form packs to fight over lampposts. Anything players would argue about, such as how much health is left, who bit whom and which pack owns a post, is decided by the server rather than reported by each phone. The server is written in Node.js and runs on its own VPS. It also stops dogs from teleporting and removes links, phone numbers and spam from the chat before the rest of the neighbourhood sees it.
So that a new player always has something to do, every run comes with a comic case lasting 10 to 15 minutes, such as "Who pooped outside Huấn's door?". You get each task in a voiced cutscene, sniff for clues, question suspects and point at the culprit. More than 240 meme lines are voiced with ElevenLabs. The dogs and people come from models the team made and models generated with AI, rigged in Blender, and the four-legged walk and every action are written in code.
Most of the work went into making it run on ordinary phones. Models were stripped of textures they did not need and compressed, the title screen appears before the characters finish loading, characters outside the frame are not drawn, and slow phones lower resolution and draw distance by themselves. Before each update, bots play the game on the live server so bugs turn up before players find them.
